Stop Waiting for "One Day"

I’ve been traveling a lot lately and one of the questions I get asked most is, “Why are you traveling so much now? Why not wait for one day when you are out of school, more established and have more money?

When I moved to New York City last summer, I frequently got the question “Why not wait till you’re in your career and have more money to actually afford the city?

And even in day to day life, more often than not I find myself hearing (and sometime even saying the words) “I can do it later”,  “I’ll do it one day” or my favorite: “Hopefully one day….” especially when it comes to the things we really want to do.

Why is it that we are so trained to believe that we will be able to buy the freedom to do what we want at a “later” time? That waiting for one day is the more logical and reasonable option? Why is it that we think conditions have to be perfect to chase what sets our soul on fire?

One day… I’ll be able to do what I REALLY want.

Why not today? Why not do what you REALLY want today? It might not be as ideal, but at least you did it, right? At least you tried it instead of waiting for the freedom to one day do it. So many people have dreams for their future, their “one day’s” or “someday’s”, but so few actually stop wishing and hoping for it and just do it.

Stop saving it for later.

Stop waiting for one day.

We always tell ourselves that we have so much time, that we can eventually get to it. But the truth is? You really don’t have that much time. This the youngest you will ever be. And you are not guaranteed a tomorrow, no one is. So stop waiting for tomorrow.

I’ve been wanting to write this for awhile now, mostly because it is something that resonates so well with me. For most of my life, I was EXACTLY this person. I always said “I’ll do it someday”, “Hopefully one day I can see the world”, “Hopefully one day I can live in my favorite place in the world”. I was always so hesitant to stop waiting and start doing because just dreaming of doing meant less of a risk of failure. But honestly, I realized that life is insanely short. I can’t predict how long I have, so I have made a promise to myself to just STOP waiting and START doing.

Don’t wait to figure every little detail out before you begin and do whatever it is you have been dying to do. Just do it!

Go for your dream job. Take that first solo trip. Move halfway around the world. Run your first marathon. Start the blog. Go back to school and get that degree.

Whatever your "one day" is, stop waiting for the perfect time to do it.

Wake up everyday and go on living your life knowing that if something were to happen to you tomorrow, you would be content; proud of the life you got to live. Be able to say that you did everything you wanted to, or at least attempted to.

I know now that I can.

Til’ Next Time,
